Effect of Weight Reduction on Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in overweight Hypertensive Young elderlymen

Abstract

Background/Aim:Overweight has a direct effect on blood pressure and ventricular dimensions. We studied the effect of the weight reduction on left ventricular hypertrophy in young elderly men.Purpose of the study: this study was designed to determine the effect of weight reduction on left ventricular hypertrophy in overweight hypertensive young elderly men. Material and Methods:It is a randomized controlled trial performed on 60 overweight hypertensive young elderly men with left ventricular hypertrophy, age range was 62-72 years old with BMI 25-35kg/m2, no history of cardiac disease and any other chronic diseases. They were divided into two equal groups. Group (A) which is control group consisted of 30 young elderly men received only medical treatment, Group (B) which is study group consisted of 30 young elderly men received weight reduction measures including aerobic exercises and restricted diet. The primary outcome measures were body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and left ventricular mass index. Each patient underwent echocardiographic measurement of myocardial deformation and velocity at baseline and at 3-month follow-up. Results: the results showed that there was statistically significant improvement in left ventricular hypertrophy in Group (B) but non-significant improvement in left ventricular hypertrophy in group (A). Conclusion: weight reduction has a positive effect on hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy in overweight hypertensive young elderly men.
