Abstract
Introduction: Intervention for Intestinal anastomosis is always considered to beof pivotal importance to the surgeons. Various techniques are employed to treatintestinalanstomosisafterresection.Aprospectivecomparativestudywasundertaken to assess the efficiency of single layered anastomosis and doublelayered intestinal anastomosis in terms of construct timings and length of stayand safetyintermsofanastomoticleak.
Methods: The patientsrecruited were thoseadmitted with varyingclinicalconditionsrequiringresectionandanastomosisofsmallorlargebowelpresented to IMS and SUMHospital. 50 patients, between 18 – 60 years andbothgender, fulfillingtheeligibilitycriteriaformedthestudypopulation.Patients were equally divided into Group A – Intervened with single layeredanastomosisandGroup B–treateddoublelayered intestinalanastomosis.
Results: Mean duration of anastomosis was 19.04 + 1.60 and 28.80 + 2.02 inGroup A and Group B respectively, which was statistically significant. Thelength of stay in Group A patients were 7.32 + 1.72 days while in Group B itwas7.92 + 2.44 days, which wasnon-significant. Anastomotic leakwas notedin1(2%) ofGroupAand2(4%) ofGroupB.
Conclusions:Singlelayertechniquerequiredsignificantlylesstimedurationfor anastomotic construct and is as safe as conventional double layer technique.
