Abstract

Periodontal disease is a complex disease that is responsible for a chronic inflammatory challenge in various parts of the body. Periodontal infections serve as a reservoir of inflammatory mediators that act as a threat to the fetal-placental unit and lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO). The microbes in the dental biofilm release substances that can activate the host immunoinflammatory responses. This challenge could trigger inflammatory mechanisms associated with preterm birth outcomes.
