Abstract

The modern space provides abundant historical and real-time availability of data. Though this talent has the power to make better decisions, a human actuator can do the opposite. Overflow of information leads not to options, but to a sensory overload. For instance, shoppers are subjected to unstructured and nuanced product content, including ingredients, food statistics, product names, and more, in the sense of conventional supermarket shopping. Much of this material includes expert expertise in the light of various areas of sustainability. During the shopping phase, on the other hand, increased digitisation and the internet of things can be used to help and inspire consumers. An optimized approach is therefore essential to guarantee consumers a high level of usability and a significant reduction of complexity. Therefore, we design a decision support system for IoT that helps consumers on the ground and allows them to take smarter decisions based on personal interests and sustainable consumption. It incorporates an indoor location system, a database of product details and a ranking system which takes into account the customer shopping preferences where customers specify the latter in an immersive smartphone app. The IoT support system addressed was implemented and validated in two retail outlets. Its contact with non-expert members has been studied over weeks, and the findings of this contribution are described.
