Abstract

A great vision on the creation of an organism that will encompass the existing knowledge of biodiversity in Mexico was voiced during the UN’s “Earth Summit”, in 1991 by the President of Mexico Carlos Salinas de Gortari.A few months later, in February 1992, the President de Gortari announced the decision on the creation of CONABIO – the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity.The aim of CONABIO was to develop a knowledge relating to Mexican biological diversity, from the genetic level of the organisms that inhabit region to the great variety of ecosystems of Mexico. CONABIO has been headed by the president of Mexico with the vigorouscontribution of keen academics from the most important institutions of the country.
